It's winter and from November onwards, not only do the days get shorter, the nights get colder and frost on the ground becomes the norm. Although there is no explicit requirement for drivers to change winter tires in Germany, the Road Traffic Act states that winter tires must be equipped if the ground is icy, snowy, slushy and frosty. The use of incorrect tires may result in fines and penalty points.
What are the signs for winter tires?
As of January 1, 2018, new winter tires must bear a specific symbol, a mountain-shaped icon with a snowflake pattern. Previously, the letter combination "M+S" was the symbol for winter tires. Winter tires produced before January 1, 2018, can be used until September 30, 2024, at most, after which they must be replaced with the new generation of winter tires. After that date, if the tire is still intact and has sufficient tread depth, it can only be used as a summer tire.
What is the difference between winter tires?
Compared to summer tires, winter tires have a rougher tread with distinct grooves. This is designed to prevent snow and mud from sticking to the tires. In addition, a special rubber compound ensures that the tires are flexible enough even at low temperatures, which helps improve their grip and power transmission.
When do I need to change my winter tires?
It is easy to remember when to change your winter tires by following these two lessons.
1. From O to O: Use winter tires from October (Oktober) to Easter (Ostern).
2. Follow the 7-degree rule: When the temperature drops below 7 degrees, it is time to change from summer to winter tires.
What should I be aware of when using winter tires?
The maximum speed that can be driven with winter tires is often different from the maximum speed of the car. When winter tires are replaced, a speed limit sign is placed near the steering wheel that shows the maximum driving speed.
Since winter tires are softer than summer tires, the car cannot go too fast or the tire's support structure will heat up, which could lead to a blowout.
